Questions about fire detection and life safety systems

Do I need a fire alarm system?

The fire risk assessment should establish the warning arrangements your building needs. The appropriate detection and alarm system depends on the premises and how they are used.

Is emergency lighting a legal requirement?

In England and Wales, escape routes that need illumination must have emergency lighting if normal lighting fails. Your fire risk assessment should consider where it is needed.

What is a PAVA system?

PAVA means public address and voice alarm. It uses loudspeakers to give spoken instructions during an emergency and can also carry everyday announcements.

What is a disabled refuge system?

It provides two-way voice communication between a refuge point and staff managing an evacuation. It supports the building's evacuation arrangements; people waiting at a refuge may also need assistance to leave.

What is an AOV?

An automatic opening vent opens when triggered by the smoke control system, allowing smoke to escape. AOVs can form part of the smoke ventilation for stairs and common corridors.
